I missed the short window

As we approach the Thanksgiving holiday, I find myself wondering where the autumn season went.

I feel like I missed the entire month of October!

In thinking about what I did with my time, I realize that I neglected a few chores around the house that I wanted to complete.

I was so excited when I spent a Saturday cleaning out our shed!

At the time, my husband questioned whether that was a good use of my day because winter was coming and neither one of us is very likely to venture out there when there’s nothing else to do outside.

But I picked one of the first crisp fall days when it wasn’t 80 degrees out and there was a breeze and it was quite comfortable for shuffling around dirty, heavy stuff.

Next, I cleaned off the back porch and I had plans to clean out the garage on the next temperate day.

But that temperate day never came!

I swear Central Pennsylvania went from 80-degree days to steady 45- to 50-degree days practically overnight.

The window to clean out my garage when it was not too hot nor too cold was about two days, and I was busy with other things on those two days.

Now, every day when I pull my car into the garage and have to slither out a narrowly-open door so as not to hit something stacked beside the car, I grimace.

Honestly, it’s not too bad. I’ve seen much worse!

But when you pull in with either a stuffed work tote or a preschooler or a dog, it makes getting into the house tricky.

The other night, I took the dog along for a ride to the grocery store and when we got home, she tried three car doors before she was able to get out of one comfortably. That’s when I realized I have a problem.

My original plan was to get the preschooler involved in helping because she is a very good mover and organizer, she uses a spray bottle of cleaner like a champ and we usually have fun while cleaning.

But it’s been so windy here that I hate to get all bundled up when we could do things inside.

I looked at the weather forecast and this weekend is to be in the mid-50s and I have no other plans, so I guess that will be my opportunity to get out there and clear things out.

I really don’t think it will take me very long—maybe two hours tops.

But that means I have to venture into the basement where I store the coats and gloves I haven’t dug out yet and when I go to the closet, I’m sure I’ll decide I need to organize that for winter first and next thing you know, my comfortable window will have again passed and I’ll have missed out again.

But they say admitting you have a problem is half the battle to solving it, so perhaps I’ll throw on a couple layers of sweatshirts from my closet, skip the basement coats, head to the garage and be like Nike and “just do it.”

I’ll let you know how it goes.
