Bird Flu found in local geese

If you take kids to lakes or ponds in Central Pennsylvania, watch what they step in. Bird Flu has been detected in some Canadian geese in the region.

Bird flu, also known as avian influenza, can spread to geese through inhalation or ingestion of the virus from infected birds. The virus is shed in the saliva, mucus, and feces of infected birds.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, although avian (bird) influenza (flu) A viruses usually do not infect people, there have been some rare cases of human infection with these viruses. Illness in humans from avian influenza virus infections have ranged in severity from no symptoms or mild illness to severe disease that resulted in death.

If you visit a local lake or pond, use caution around birds, wash your hands or use hand sanitizer and make sure to wipe your shoes with a disinfecting wipe when you return home.
