Don’t let tragedy strike–check your toy chests

This news article made me cringe. A Florida family lost their 4-year-old twins in a tragic accident that could happen to any family.

The gist of the story is the parents put their children to bed. At some point during the night, the twins woke up and decided to play in their room—something that happened “a lot,” according to their mother.

Typically, the kids would be found in the morning on the floor among their toys. But this day was different.

Come morning, the children were missing. They weren’t in their beds or on their floor. After tearing the house apart, an older sibling discovered the twins inside their cedar toy chest used to store their stuffed animals.

By the time the children were found, it was too late.

Unbeknownst to the parents, most wooden chests once closed are airtight and soundproof. Even if the children had tried to call for help, they wouldn’t have been heard.

Check your chests and any other furniture, especially if you’ve repurposed soemthing. Make sure what you have in your home—especially what you have in the room where the kids stay—is childproof and safe.

No family should have to face a tragedy like this one.
